Brahmasree Edamana N. Balamurali Namboothiri is a Kerala-based temple priest trained in the traditional Tantric and ritual systems of Kerala temples. His priestly career has included service at prominent temples including the Puthiyakavu Bhagavathi Temple in Kollam and the Attukal Bhagavathi Temple in Thiruvananthapuram, in addition to his later tenure as Melsanthi of the Sabarimala Sree Ayyappa Temple.
Early Training and Entry into Priesthood
Balamurali Namboothiri was born into the Edamana Illam family of Manikanteswaram, Thiruvananthapuram. According to a 2011 profile in The New Indian Express, his initial training in pooja was received from his father and relatives before he joined the Tanthra Vidyapeetham at Aluva.
He subsequently completed the institution’s six-year Thanthra Ratna course. His traditional training provided the foundation for his subsequent work as a temple priest and Melsanthi.
Service at Puthiyakavu Bhagavathi Temple
An important part of Balamurali Namboothiri’s priestly career was his long association with the Puthiyakavu Bhagavathi Temple in Kollam.
The New Indian Express reported in October 2011 that he had been serving as the temple’s Melsanthi since October 1995, apart from a one-year period when he served at Attukal Bhagavathi Temple. The same report described him as the temple’s Thirumeni and noted that the temple staff gathered to receive the news of his selection to Sabarimala.
His long tenure at Puthiyakavu therefore represents a substantial part of his priestly career outside Sabarimala.
Melsanthi of Attukal Bhagavathi Temple
In 2010, Balamurali Namboothiri was appointed Melsanthi of the Attukal Bhagavathi Temple in Thiruvananthapuram.
According to The New Indian Express, he took charge for a one-year period beginning with Chingam 1 in 2010. The report identified him as a resident of Manikanteswaram Idamana Illam and noted that he had previously served as Melsanthi at Puthiyakavu Bhagavathi Temple. It also recorded his qualification as a Thantra Ratnam from Tanthra Vidyapeetham, Aluva.
His appointment at Attukal placed him in charge of ritual worship at one of Thiruvananthapuram’s prominent Devi temples before his subsequent selection for Sabarimala.
Selection as Sabarimala Melsanthi
Balamurali Namboothiri was selected as Melsanthi of the Sabarimala Sree Ayyappa Temple in October 2011. At the time, he was 39 years old and had already accumulated extensive experience in temple priesthood.
The significance of his earlier experience is particularly evident in contemporary reporting: when he was selected for Sabarimala, The New Indian Express described him primarily through his long service at Puthiyakavu and his previous one-year appointment at Attukal.
He subsequently served as Sabarimala Melsanthi during the 2011–2012 term.
Continuing Role in Temple Traditions
Balamurali Namboothiri’s association with temple traditions did not end with his Sabarimala tenure.
In 2015, The New Indian Express reported that he was part of a committee involved in selecting Melsanthis for several major temples under the Travancore Devaswom Board. The committee included temple authorities and senior ritual specialists, with Balamurali identified in the report as a former Sabarimala Melsanthi.
A Kerala High Court judgment concerning temple priest appointments also records Balamurali’s participation in an interview board for the selection of a Keezhsanthi at the P.D. Manikanteswaram temple in 2018. The judgment identifies him as the former Melsanthi of Sabarimala and records his participation in the selection process.
These records provide evidence of his continued involvement in matters concerning temple priesthood and the selection of priests after his Sabarimala tenure.
Recognition in the Tantric and Temple Community
In October 2023, Balamurali Namboothiri received the Smriti Award at an event organised by the Thiruvananthapuram district zone of the Akhila Kerala Thanthri Mandalam. The event included the Ashta Aishwarya Mahayagnam and Sri Chakra Puja, along with the organisation’s annual meeting and Acharya Kudumba Sangam. The award was presented by Kizhakke Munchira Madom Parameswara Brahmananda Theertha Swamiyar.
The recognition is particularly relevant to his broader priestly career because it came more than a decade after his Sabarimala tenure and was presented in the context of a gathering of Kerala’s Tantric and temple-priest community.
Continuing Ritual Service
His involvement in traditional ritual activities has also continued in recent years.
In November 2024, Balamurali Namboothiri served as the chief ritual officiant at an Irumudikkettu ceremony held for S. Arunkumar Namboothiri, who was preparing to assume the position of Sabarimala Melsanthi. The ceremony took place at Thottam in Shakthikulangara, and Malayala Manorama reported that the traditional Irumudikkettu was prepared under Balamurali’s leadership.
This later appearance is significant because it demonstrates his continuing participation in the ritual and preparatory traditions associated with Sabarimala, even after completing his own tenure as Melsanthi.
A Continuing Priesthood

His documented service includes a long association with Puthiyakavu Bhagavathi Temple, a subsequent appointment at Attukal Bhagavathi Temple, his tenure at Sabarimala, participation in the selection of temple priests under the Travancore Devaswom Board, and continued involvement in traditional religious ceremonies.
